Coppens de Houthulst, Willy DAYS ON THE WING: Being the War Memoirs of Major the Chevalier Willy Coppens de Houthulst, D.S.O., M.C., Etc., Etc. Translated by A. J. Insall. Illustrated by Leonard Bridgman. Coppens was the highest scoring Belgian air ace in World War I. He downed 37 enemy aircraft, most of them German observation balloons. He was also renowned for his impromptu aerobatic displays. These were, in a sense, victory "dances" which he performed amidst the anti-aircraft fire behind enemy lines after he had destroyed a balloon. Eventually, he was brought down by shrapnel and had a leg amputated. Coppens remained a member of the Belgian Air Force until after his country's surrender to Hitler's armies in 1940. His book is filled with graphic descriptions of exciting air combat and life in a World War I air squadron. LC79-7242 London, [1931] ISBN: 0405121571 illus. $28.95
